Our Little Picco

Etto's team is a bunch of animal lovers. Lucky for us you are too. Tin City, especially on the weekends is usually filled with dogs of all shapes and sizes and even some cats in carry strollers. We have our Etto cats out back - Buccatini and Linguini, whom some of you might have spotted over the years hanging out by the waterfall. We also sell our Fido and Figaro pasta which is featured in our restaurant as puppy and kitty pasta. This pasta is loved by kids and adults alike.

Last week, our family experienced the sudden loss of our little Picco, an Italian greyhound we adopted as a puppy. Maybe you never met Picco, but you've surely seen him. He's featured prominently on our wallpaper at Etto Pasta Bar, in a couple of spots on our pasta boxes that are shipped far and wide and even on our wine label for the wine made from our little home vineyard.

Several years ago, we adopted an older Italian greyhound named Maia (at least eight years old we think) and she was a very sweet dog and very quickly became a part of our family. A couple years later the folks from the greyhound rescue called us and said they had a puppy available for adoption; they only offered puppies to people who had adopted older dogs. The call came to my wife who subsequently told my daughters. By then, what could I say?  A couple of days later we drove to San Jose to pick up Picco.

They warned us that bringing a puppy into our house could be a bit of a transition for our older dog and that it might take a while for them to become accustomed to each other. This clearly was not the case, instead it was love at first sight. Maia started acting younger and Picco became her protector.

Maia had several health problems over the years but lived a long life. When she passed away Picco became the little man of the house. He watched through the windows for anything that moved and chased anything and everything from deer to crows and of course ground squirrels. Dogs are special because they show unconditional love no matter what. After a long and difficult day a family dog is always there to pick you up. They're excited from the moment they hear your car, open the door and enter the house greeting you with a wagging tail and hopefully not too much jumping. He was always with us in the house, cheered everyone up and brought our family together.

In our twelve years with Picco he was always excited to see us and never stopped running and jumping like a puppy until all of a sudden he didn't and we knew something was wrong. Picco never had a serious medical problem a day of his life until one day he did; we thought he would live forever. He developed IMHA, a severe blood disease. After a few blood transfusions and lots of hope he couldn't fight anymore so we had to say goodbye.

Our hearts ache right now for the loss of our little guy and family protector, but we know he will still be with us and watching over all we do at Etto. We look forward to seeing all of your furry friends around Tin City and on our patio at the Pasta Bar. We miss you, Picco, and will remember you whenever our guests delight in your image on our wallpaper and order our kitty and puppy pasta.
